Welcome to Week 2 designers. For this task we have partnered with Compartes Chocolate Co. to promote their new truffle selection. We want you to create an outfit to promote the product.

Listed below are 4 truffle selections to inspire an original design. The truffle that you decide to use for this weeks task will be reflected on your shoe. Using that as your main inspiration; create a design that reflects the pattern, colour, flavour of the truffle itself. Good luck.

This design sits in limbo with me. I have very mixed feelings. Though the layering is masterful; you’ve shown your expertise in combining layers in the past; and I would like to see you break out of your comfort zone. I think the jacket, though it represents the shoe, is a bit obvious and it would have been nicer to see something really unique to represent the flavour of the chocolate. Thanks.

Calum

The allocation of the various shades of green is a little strange. I think the greens oozing out of random spots is odd for the shoe choice. Although this is a perfectly fine outfit. You used the jacket I absolutely detest, and made it work – maybe due to it being in black. I think the top half is stronger than what you were going for underneath.  The bottom half is a sort of underwhelming, the layering is done well, that's undeniable, but I'm so used to that layering used a lot. You went literal with the colour palette, this design is fine, just let down by a lack of cohesion. But honestly not a favourite this week.

I believe you took the chocolate aspect of this task too literal. I appreciate the mixed mediums you used to create detailed textures. I wish there were some black in this design to reflect the shoe a bit more, perhaps on the side of the shorts. The biggest downfall is the brown. There is far too much of it and it swallows up the design (no pun intended). I think you’re far better than this.

Calum

Very mixed opinions on this outfit. Brown and yellow is a questionable choice especially considering the flavour is citrus. That necklace sticks out in a bad way – I’m assuming you wanted to incorporate some yellow into the outfit but the necklace just doesn’t do it for me. The overall layout is nothing special, but I do like the textures of that top. I feel like this is a slight improvement on last week but this outfit just doesn’t embody citrus at all, or work in tandem with the shoes – everything just blends together wrong. Sorry, I’m not a huge fan of this design.

The linear strikes through this design are your saving grace. They reflect the shoes beautifully and show your talents in combining unorthodox accessories to create patterns. The lower tint of yellow on your ombre top is drawing from the vibrancy of the shoe and I can’t stop looking at it. I wish you either kept it solid or maybe added a pale yellow. You played it safe this week in my opinion. For the weeks to come, I’d like to see you be an individual that isn’t afraid to show me what powerful creations you’ve designed. Stop relying on others so much for approval; that goes for a lot of people. Thanks.

Calum

I think citrus was definitely the riskiest and most difficult pattern to choose from. Do I think you pulled it off? Almost, but not quite. The outfit itself really highlights the shoes which I appreciate, but I have some issues with the outfit itself. The top is perfect, the fading yellow definitely reflects the citrus theme, but the white of the jacket and the skirt just doesn’t work. The use of blacks in and around the jacket I do enjoy, all those curved and straight black lines add a lot of dimension to the outfit. It’s just a shame you went with a lot of white and black on a flavour I’d expect something a lot more vivid. But you did reflect the pattern of the shoes. I don’t dislike this by any means, just certain elements brought it down.

This is very exciting for me; you’ve put a lot of thought into this, this week. I can see the inspiration instantly. I love that you didn’t use black in the design; it makes the shoe stand out that much more. The colours are so fitting. I’ve never seen anyone use that colour jacket in a design before; it is stunning. A very well put together design this week. Thanks.

Calum

Thank you, this is SUCH an improvement on last week. This outfit is so vibrant and conducted quite simply. The subtle pinks and the muted red underneath the jacket are very controlled. That jacket looks like a literal raspberry with those grooves in the texture, and that scarf is a really nice centrepiece to the whole outfit, without distracting from the shoes, which really work with this outfit. Good job, keep it up please!

Before adding the shoe to your design, I thought this was very pretentious and didn’t see how it would reflect well after editing. Once I put the shoe to the design. This is absolutely gorgeous. The splatters are so reflective of the shoe and it’s very cohesive. My favourite element of this design would be the red lines running through the bodice and skirt, matching the left shoe. I don’t have a bad thing to say about this design. Thanks for another great design.

Calum

I didn't love this too much on the shoot, then I loved it like crazy, and now I'm sort of peacefully enjoying it (this is positive). I think you replicated the splatter-esque design of the shoe really well underneath the dense black shawl and the prominent use of that purple is gorgeous. Plus I really like those red streaks that dart through the top of your design. If I had to nitpick, it would be the belt you chose, it clutters the design just a little. However this outfit is another stellar submission. Très bien!

You’ve created a very inventive horizontal pattern; I think in relation to the shoe it works well. I wish you had added some more vibrant pinks into this to mimic the shoes flavour that much more. It stands kind of opposite in my opinion to the colours of the shoe. I understand you may have wanted to stand out, but the shoe overpowers too much that I feel you’re being ignored. You could have played with something brighter, even adding pink into the jacket instead of black. I also feel the necklace wasn’t necessary. Not my favourite design this week. Thanks.

Calum

This was a bold move to use lots of different shades that stray from the bright pink of the shoe. But after hearing your inspiration for the outfit of a raspberry colour palette - I can understand why. I think those horizontal lines are amazing and I'm completely entranced by them, until I keep glaring up to see that necklace. I hate it. If you had kept the necklace off, which I'm assuming is covering a wider, bold patch of colour - I think this outfit would have worked better. Although I see what you have done and you have represented the shoe just in a more picturesque way. I think you've still done good this week.

I mentioned last week in a critique that creating illusions can be very risky, considering how often it doesn’t turn out. You made this work. I’m very pleased that you managed to pick yourself up and produce something worthy of being in this competition. The simple yet sleek black silhouette leaves this design clean and minimal. With the pop of colour that represents the shoe and flavour of your chosen chocolate is brilliant. I enjoy the resourcefulness and spontaneity this creation has to offer. Good job.

Calum

This is outfit is delicious. Metaphorically of course. I love this. I think directly extracting the pattern and copying it on the top half was such a wise decision - more so for this specific truffle. The pattern you managed to create is so gorgeous and I'm very impressed with how much impact you have made with so little. Its a burst of colour that stands out perfectly in relation to the black. This is a rise from the ashes; so congratulations this week.

Xigma

Fiona

This design is my favourite this week. Immediately I look past all the outer layers you’ve created and I see the shirt. The ripples of fabric in the shirt itself mock that of the shoe and I can’t get over how genius this is. I especially like the addition of the scarf, the colour rounds the outfit to a mellow tone and I can enjoy every element from top to bottom. I think you did a great job creating lines and different textures in this piece; especially in the shorts. Thanks.

Calum

This design is the prefect example of something composed and collected; to great effect. All the fabrics you used really flow with each other. That top is stunning, the rigid textures, and a small dose of it, is enough punching power to highlight the rest of the outfit. The similar greens on the jacket, and then all of this is counteracted with those soft rusty red of the scarf and even the glasses -It's very well balanced. You've done a great job this week reflecting and encapsulating your shoe choice - well done!

Kushmas

The ombre is beautiful. The dark-to-light you’ve added through the use of green in the overall design is a nice touch. I appreciate you using the black as the majority of the design, though it may seem excessive; it definitely doesn’t overpower the green and the shoe. I don’t have many negative things to say about this. You’re a front-runner for sure. Thanks for another great week.

Calum

Without a doubt my favourite outfit this week. This is so divine. You chose three perfect green shades and elevated them with the black of the rest of the outfit. The black panels that separate each green and the jacket that cuts them off at a similar length. I wish I could say more but this is so breathtaking that it's beyond the glossy compliments. It's refinement at its peak - tweaking every element to depict the nature of the chosen chocolate. Incredible.

Rotisary

Fiona

This is not by any means a bad design, it has flaws that for obvious reasons; wouldn’t lead me to pick it as a top design, but it’s got great elements. I don’t particularly enjoy the proportions; the jacket is far too large for a simple silhouette on the bottom. I also wish you went farther out of your comfort zone, like last week. To produce something we’ve never seen before. This is generic. The beige was a great design choice, it broke up the black and green, I could see every element of clothing and it made this design easier to swallow. Thanks.

Calum

I thought this was quite a good outfit when I first saw it, but then everyone else began to submit and it has faded to some degree. I'm not a huge fan of the puffy jacket and I'm over that bottom layering that's everywhere. The whole thing looks a little basic, honestly. But it's not all bad as I don't take back my original thoughts of this being a good outfit. I enjoy the beige as it really infuses your chocolate choice in a way that does not directly mimic the shoes; which I appreciate. It's a nice outfit, but that's all there is to it.

You’ve managed to lift this design high this week. Very exciting to see something so clean and linear. The pops of colours are fresh and work well with the citrus shoe. I like how you’ve broken the design with the use of the black belt, not only does it balance the design but it creates unity. It’s not absurd and it reflects everything envisioned by the inspiration prompt. I especially like the earrings, their use is hardly recognized in most designs, due to how unconventional they can be; I really see the appropriateness of them in this design. Thanks.

Calum

I was hoping for a successful citrus outfit this week and you definitely delivered. I think this outfit is weirdly out of the box for how simple it is. Probably because it's taken me by surprise. You chose to emphasise the colours rather than the pattern itself which I love. The large blocks of orange and yellow is sublime, with the cut-off points at the belts and the sleeves - they tie the colours together and they for sure represent citrus. It's simple, its chic and effective. The boldness of the outfit speaks for itself. Good job this week. Love!

Ribbit

Fiona

I can appreciate the attempt to form a design into something that reflects the task; but submitting this seemed as though it was hardly an attempt. You were late to submit this week, resulting in penalties that reflect on your score; however they did not make a difference in our decision this week. You said it yourself, this wasn't a great design. The pink is confusing; the combination of fabrics on the torso are poor. I think you're better than this. Thanks.

Calum

I'm not going to address the late submission fiasco in detail because you will be critiqued with the same merit as everyone else. But was this worth the wait? No. This outfit is confused; from the goggles to the diaper. The whites completely wash out the pink in the jacket and make it unappealing. This outfit is also very top heavy - I can see you were perhaps trying to show off the shoe with the white pants, but the shoe outshines you here completely. It's a shame because your bold design choice last week showed promise for it to be tarnished by this outfit.

Though it's my responsibility to ensure designers are following rules; I feel as though you're making your own. You're 1 of 2 designers this week who misread the task and showed up to set very confused. Wrong gender, wrong hair, wrong shoes. The confusion reflects your design completely. I wish you used a bit of black in this design and broke free from the originality this evokes. We're looking for more this season and you haven't delivered thus far. Pick it up please.

Calum

Wrong hair colour from last week. Please read to the rules and stick to them; revert back to your old hair colour. Onto the outfit - I find this hard to enjoy. The layout is simple but It's not elevating the outfit or making it special. More importantly the only thing that highlights the shoe here is the scarf; which is lost within the rest of the outfit. I don't understand the why you chose blue, and maybe it is a failure to understand on my part but it does not look good, especially next to that beige. I feel like this design wants to be something but isn't. I don't think it's tailored to this task at all.

That's it for Week 2 designers, an exciting week; very innovative designs.  Listed below are the individual critiques we did - amounting to a score that you will see on the progress page. Happy reading.
